Clinical Training in Medical Oncology

Welcome!

Medical Oncology is an exciting speciality exploding with new understanding about Cancer and its treatments.
We are looking for highly motivated, committed and empathic individuals to join us as Advanced Trainee Registrars.
This page contains some further information about training in Medical Oncology at the Prince of Wales (POW), St George
and Wollongong Hospitals.

Training in SESIAHS

On January 1, 2005 the Illawarra Area Health Service and South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service were amalgamated into a single entity, the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service (SESIAHS). SESIAHS covers approximately 6,331 square kilometres, stretching from Sydney Harbour in the north to Durras in the south. The Area includes highly urbanised areas of eastern Sydney, southern Sydney, Wollongong and Port Kembla, which contrast with the predominantly rural areas of Kiama and Shoalhaven. There are approximately 1.16 million residents living in the area covered by SESIAHS, 17% of the population of NSW. About SESIAHS - Boundaries

Prince of Wales, St George and Wollongong Hospitals are major referral centres within SESIAHS. For many years, Advanced Trainees in Medical Oncology were jointly recruited at Prince of Wales and St George Hospitals, spending a year at each. Wollongong Hospital was included in this process in 2008. Sub-speciality training in Medical Oncology takes 3 years. This includes 2 years of core training in Medical Oncology and an elective year. For more information, check out the Royal Australasian College of Physicians training website.

Training at the different hospitals will allow you to undergo a variety of experiences in general, sub-speciality, rural and outreach oncology practices. You will learn to care for patients under the guidance of experienced clinicians, be given the opportunity to do clinical research, receive expert tutorials and contribute to the teaching of your colleagues and other health professionals, and work as part of a committed team.
